7/5/2023 0 Comments Troop 6000 by Nikita Stewart![]() Giselle had worked for the Girl Scouts and had the idea to establish a troop in the shelter, and with the support of a group of dedicated parents, advocates, and remarkable girls, Troop 6000 was born. She knew that her daughters and the other girls living at the shelter needed to be a part of something where they didn’t feel the shame or stigma of being homeless, and could develop skills and a community they could be proud of. ![]() With curfews and lack of amenities, it felt more like a prison than a home, and Giselle, at the mercy of a broken system, grew fearful about her family’s future. They soon found themselves living at a Sleep Inn in Queens, provided by the city as temporary shelter for nearly a year, all six lived in a single room with two beds and one bathroom. Giselle and her kids were thrown into New York City’s overburdened shelter system, which housed nearly 60,000 people each day. Though she had a full-time job, the demands of ever-increasing rent and mounting bills forced her to fall behind, and eviction soon followed. ![]() ![]() Giselle Burgess was a young mother of five trying to provide for her family. The inspiring true story of the first Girl Scout troop founded for and by girls living in a shelter in Queens, New York, and the amazing, nationwide response that it sparked ![]()

![]() Kafka, who has hopes he may find the mother and sister who left when he was little, finds his way to the island of Shikoku where, in a private library in Takamatsu, he gets given a job and a room. Though a teacher confesses it was a beating from her that caused brain damaged that took away memory and reading skills but gave him a new ability: he can communicate with cats. Then there is the story of an old man called Nakata (Katsumi Kiba) who survived teenage exposure to what he believes was a great flash of light in the sky that left him unconscious for weeks. First there is a 15-year-old lad who chooses to call himself Kafka (Nino Furuhata) who runs away from home where he lives with his father to avoid a prediction like the one that cursed Oedipus. This is not one but two intertwining stories. Indeed its plot and complexities are far more than could be fitted into an ordinary length evening in the theatre. ![]() Haruki Murakami is a fascinating writer though his books are often surreal novels can be quite difficult to interpret-John Updike described this one as "an insistently metaphysical mind-bender". ![]() ![]() I too saw my first Bond at the Classic cinema in Hendon Central while Peter, it turns out, was a tourist (visiting his auntie), I grew up there, at the end of the M1. Rather weirdly, I realise I may have sat in exactly the same seat as Peter, a few years later. ![]() ![]() The affection that Bond films inspire seems in no way connected to considerations of their actual quality: who, honestly, would voluntarily re-watch any of them other than slumped wearily in front of the TV on Christmas Day? That, presumably, is why they seem so linked to time and place: like Peter Bradshaw, I remember gawping saucer-eyed at this, my first big-screen Bond, as an 11-year-old: it seemed, as for Peter, to have issued from a world of impossibly grown-up glamour and excitement. ![]() ![]() was also entertaining, and OMG he did not propose in the end (although they are married by book 2). If you’re looking for something fun and witty, or if you like Scandal, this series is for you. (I don’t think there are this many dukedoms in England, but hey, let’s just go with it) There’s a lot of fun and witty banter, and the settings are both typical and unusual at the same time. The women aren’t afraid to say their minds, they aren’t really virgins, and the guys aren’t such idiots. ![]() I love this series because I find it unconventional for a traditional romance. Can Elise bring him back? And what happens when she reveals who she really is? Noah Ellery escaped from the prison of his dukedom (hint: there is way more to this than I’m writing here) when he was in his teens, and he is not about to go back, not after the way he was treated. She is tasked with finding the missing Duke of Ashland, believed dead since he was ten years old. ![]() I love my library.)Įlise de Vries works for Chegarre & Associates - basically, the Regency version of the gladiators from Scandal (ie discreet fixers who handle indelicate affairs). ![]() ![]() (Yes, you can do that - it’s called ‘Suggestions’. Kelly Bowen is the one new author I picked up last year, and has kept me reading: I now make the library order her books for me. I hardly read romance anymore (as evidenced, likely, by my lack of posting). Or: Dear god, Wandergurl has written a review! If you’re looking for something fun and witty, or if you like Scandal (the TV show), this series is for you. ![]() ![]() After Ernst was taken from their home to a Nazi internment camp in 1940, Carrington fled France. ![]() Four years later, she ran off with Max Ernst and became a darling of the art world in Paris: serving guests hair omelets at one party, arriving naked to another. She was born to a wealthy English family in 1917, expelled from two convents as a girl, and presented to the king’s court in 1933. By the way, they describe Carrington this way: Once primarily known for her surrealist painting, in recent years Carrington has re-emerged in our collective consciousness as a fantastic (and fantastical) writer, thanks to cool-as-hell indie press Dorothy’s 2017 edition of her collected work. ![]() My latest favorite writer Leonora Carrington was born 102 years ago this month. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Suited for You by Aiden Bates![]() ![]() ![]() Saint's and Braxton's first encounter was unveiled during the first book's last chapter and it got me hooked. I really like the opposites attract trope and if we mix it with the enemies to lovers, even if as light as it is here, then it becomes just perfect. ![]() I liked this one better than the previous one, because I found the romance to be more natural and satisfying, but it still has some cons that let me down a little bit. ![]() But when my own insecurities about my self-worth threaten everything we could have, I’ll need to find a way to move past them … or I’ll lose the best thing to ever happen to me. Saint fits in with my family, my step-father loves him, and the chemistry between us shows no signs of stopping. We’re total opposites … can we really make it work for more than a night of pleasure?Īt first it seems perfect. I’ve spent my whole life working towards this moment, and I can’t let myself fall for his good looks, no matter how much I crave him.īut long hours and close quarters are a combination neither of us can resist, and soon heat at the office turns into a wicked night in bed. But there’s more to the man than a showy Porsche and killer smile. Unlike me, he’s never had to struggle for anything a day in his life … or so I think. One arrogant, materialistic, flashy problem: Saint Caldwell. Becoming a partner at Caldwell and Holton will be the crowning achievement in my hard fought career. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Fueled by K.
