7/1/2023 0 Comments The 13th reality books![]() ![]() That was not the case and my 11 year old was capable of understanding most of what was articulated. ![]() I checked out the reviews here before watching this with my oldest (age 11) tonight and was prepared for intense violence. Learn about slavery, Jim Crow Era, the Civil rights movement, and police brutality first. But this should not be the first thing you expose your children to about racism it would be too overwhelming. ![]() I think this was a great documentary because it had a running timeline putting together all the pieces from the 13th amendment to the disproportionate mass incarceration of black people on this country and connecting all the racist dots along the way. But we didn’t know about ALEC, about the war on drugs targeting black communities (crack vs cocaine), and Bill Clinton’s role in over funding the police. We homeschool and my kids already learned about slavery, lynching, segregation, Jim Crow Laws, the KKK, Martin Luther King, the Black Pathers, Emmett Till, the many modern police killings that are discussed in this film and the racist comments of Donald Trump. But after watching it I think she could’ve watched it. I watched this with my 13 year old son but not my 9 year old daughter because of the reviews. ![]()
